Carbon Fiber Concrete Reinforcing for Structural Strengthening

Strengthen Building Structures with Carbon Fiber Reinforcing

Project Overview

Location: High-Rise Development, Kelowna

Solution: Carbon Fiber Reinforcing with Mapei Canada Materials

A high-rise developer faced a critical issue when the core concrete did not meet the required design strength during construction. As the floors were poured sequentially, removing upper floors to re-pour the concrete was not feasible. Additionally, adding bulk materials to the interior did not comply with building codes, and an alternative solution was needed.

Why Use Carbon Fiber Reinforcing for Concrete?

Carbon fibre is a lightweight yet incredibly strong material, providing structural reinforcement without compromising building design or space. Key benefits include:

  • Stronger than steel with minimal thickness

  • Non-intrusive repairs – do not impede access or alter space usage

  • Can be painted or covered for seamless integration into building design

Application Process:

  1. Fiocco Anchor Installation: Installed anchors to transfer load through walls and distribute forces evenly.

  2. Carbon Fiber Wrap Application: Mapei AX-300 and AX-600 wraps were applied to the concrete’s exterior, providing thin yet powerful reinforcement.

  3. Seamless Finish: Once installed, the reinforcing was paintable or coverable, ensuring that it blended into the structure and did not affect vehicle or pedestrian access.

This innovative reinforcing method resolved the issue efficiently, saving both time and costs while ensuring compliance with building codes.
