Pavement will have a life of approximately 15-40 years. This will depend on traffic loading, water content in the soil, thickness of asphalt, and wearing of the surface.
Protect the surface from chemicals, excessive wear, loading and moisture penetration, and you will get the full life out of your asphalt pavement.
Costs will vary by size and scope. Assuming is it larger scale paving (greater than 15,000 sq.ft.), it can be common for removal and replacements to run $4.25 to $6.50 per sq.ft.
The lower cost side would be a simple large square, 50mm removal and 50mm replacement. Traffic control, vehicle restrictions, time restrictions and distance from the plant will cost more.
A straight forward prep and pave on gravel will run cheaper at $2.75 to $4.00 per sq.ft.

Paving Is An Asset Investment

Do it right the first time to avoid headaches with maintenance a year later. Paving will cause property values to go up and as such, it is preferrable to keep them up. A cheap job will often result in maintenance and lost value in the short term.

Choosing the right mix design for the application can be critical to the long term life of the product or the visual appearance of the finished product. There are numerous types of asphalt mix designs and suppliers of asphalt materials. Each mix has their own benefit and use and no, they are often not interchangeable for each application. General common mix designs will work, but targeted designs for the use will work better in the long term.

Know what you are buying by asking questions. Does the paving company have answers or is the answer always "it'll be fine"? Anyone can place and roll gravel, but can they do it with knowledge to make it last longer? Is drainage being full accounted for?
